On the first day of the Champions League group stage, Borussia Dortmund kicks off against FC Copenhagen. Copenhagen returns to the Champions League group stage for the first time since 2016 but has started uncharacteristically slow (much like Jonny Futbol’s current recovery speed) in the Danish Superliga. The current Danish champions have lost 4 of their first 7 matches after only losing 4 of the 32 matches all of last season.

The biggest storyline for Dortmund heading into the 2022/2023 season is how the team will go about replacing Erling Haaland’s production. Dortmund has built a reputation on developing young talent and has consistently replaced one young star with another. Haaland will be particularly difficult to replace after scoring 29 goals in 30 games last season. The club did bring in 34 year old journeyman Anthony Modeste in the summer, but they can hardly expect to rely on him in this heavily congested season interrupted by the World Cup.

Next up in the youth pipeline (young enough to be Modeste’s children) are striker Youssoufa Moukoko and winger Jamie Bynoe-Gittens. Both young talents are starting to show flashes, but still lack significant production at the senior level. Moukoko made history in 2020 as Dortmund’s youngest ever player at 16 years and 18 days. Thus far in this early Bundesliga season, he has played 97 minutes with one goal and two assists, all of which came in a 3-1 away to Freiburg. In 2020, Bynoe-Gittens followed Jadon Sancho’s footsteps (I think this is a good thing?????) in making the move from Manchester City to Borussia Dortmund. Bynoe-Gittens only turned 18 on August 8 th but has contributed one goal in 117 Bundesliga minutes so far this season.

From an American perspective, this looks like a game in which we may see Gio Reyna feature. Reyna has been sidelined with injuries for much of the last year, and the club recently announced he won’t be traveling to away games for the near future. This game is at home for Dortmund and will “theoretically” be more of a comfortable game relative to the stiff Bundesliga competition, so I’m expecting to see him get on the field at some point, if not from the start.
